Like clockwork, each January or February the upcoming summer’s Wellfleet Triathlon sells out. It’s easy for the veterans of this race to see why:
While Wellfleet Tri is a true sprint triathlon — in every way that a triathlon can be characterized — there’s something that’s just plain different about Wellfleet. Maybe it’s the “hang loose, enjoy life” vibe of this village, maybe it’s the drop-dead gorgeous location for the swim, bike snd run segments, maybe it’s the knowledge you are swimming in water and following roads that have been used by humans for hundreds if not thousands of years. But the friendly, “everyone-here-is-your-friend” atmosphere just cannot be denied — and really is cherished by our repeat participants.
The major beneficiary of the Wellfleet Triathlon is the non-profit community radio station, WOMR. Based in nearby Provincetown, this station is the only on-air source for news and information about the communities along Outer Cape Cod, including Wellfleet. It is treasured by residents and visitors alike. And like all non-profit entities, WOMR is always in need of funding to be able to stay on-air year-round.
Do you need to be an experienced triathlete to compete at Wellfleet? No, as this is a “sprint triathlon” — meaning that the distance of each leg of the race is relatively short (swim 1/4 mile, bike 12 miles, run 3 miles). You do want to be comfortable swimming for 15-20 minutes (although the majority of participants complete Wellfleet’s swim in less than 10 minutes). Our less experienced athletes are welcome to coast on the bicycle leg (when they can) and walk parts of the run.
The final 10 slots in our race are always offered in May, to people who wish not only to be part of this race but also wish to contribute to WOMR. An additional $100 is added to the registration fee for these slots. They will become available at 8am on Thursday, May 1.
If you missed out on the general registration for this year’s race, please consider giving to this great cause with your charity entry. On or after May 1 simply click here to visit the registration page.
